The Examined Life On-Line Philosophy Journal is one of the few on-line philosophy journals that is completely free to everyone. More than that, it plans to stay entirely free to everyone. This does not mean, however, that the journal does not have expenses; quite the contrary, it has several. Whether it is software upgrades, or just general services, the journal does generate bills. In order to continue to grow, and carry out some future plans, the journal would appreciate the help of its readership who are willing. Let me give you an overview as to what we have planned. One of the first things that the staff of the journal would like to go forward with is a contest for a scholarship for promising young philosophers. We would like to begin the introduction of philosophy to high school students and give them a chance to submit their work to the journal for publication. It would be a competition where the top three would get their articles published, and the first prize would be a scholarship to the college of their choice. The second and third place entries would be eligible for other prizes such as books or Examined Life Merchandise. This, of course, will take money, but would be a great way to give back to philosophy! Other expenses come in the form of needed software upgrades. The journal has grown so much in the past two years that it is becoming increasingly harder to keep up with. Currently, The Examined Life currently has over 5000 files on the site. In order to organize the content in an easier form, and keep it easy to access, the journal needs to invest in a content management system. Other need upgrades deal with the software used to design and develop the site. Please do not misunderstand, the journal is free and will continue to be so. But, if any of you are willing to help defray some of the expenses there are several ways in which you can help to support the journal: 1/ Now located at the bottom of the main page of the journal and on the side bar of the article pages is located an image that says "Click Here To Give!" This is a new program sponsored by Amazon.com and allows you to use their secure servers to donate money to The Examined Life. Payments can be as large or small as you wish, and it will go a long way in helping the journal to defray upcoming expenses. 2/ You can also purchase a variety of Examined Life Merchandise from the Examined Life Store. Each purchase helps the journal. 3/ Located at the new discussion forums, search engine, and start page, the journal has gathered some sponsors who will donate to the journal each time you purchase one of their products. Whether it is books, educational supplies, computer software or more, you can find a variety of wares for your consideration. Again, all of this is voluntary. But if you are of a mind, and the means, and you would like The Examined Life continue to succeed, please consider helping in one of the above manners Thank you for your
support of The Examined Life!
