Picture taken at The Cave of the Winds at the base of Pike's Peak, Colorado Springs, CO] Mitch Hodge was born in Alberquerque NM to parents who were in the Air Force. Mitch spent much of his life traveling, and this is a habit that has followed him ever since. Mitch has covered the continental US from coast to coast and from southern border to the northern. When in high school, he received one of the most valuable gifts of his life; a month tour of Europe. This trip opened his eyes to the world, and widened his world view tremendously. Most of his early life, Mitch pursued the sciences. For a project in 9th grade, he became pen pals with the now famous Dr. Robert Ballard (of Titanic fame) and wrote a 60 page study on the nature of the deep sea vents off of the Galapogos Islands where unique forms of life had been found. He continued his interest in science through high school. As a senior, he and his classmates where given a national award for a proposal on alternative energy to meet the country's growing energy demands in the near and distant future. Continuing this interest in his first pass at college, Mitch chose as his major geological oceanography. Being young and impatient, however, Mitch left college to "make money". Six years later, Mitch's academic interests were sparked again, and this time he took up the study of world religions. After reading and contemplating many of the world's sacred texts, Mitch decided to return to college part-time and study religion. As a bizarre coincidence, his selected course in world religions was cancelled, and Mitch ended up in a philosophy class. This began an entirely new love affair. Mitch went on to the University of Texas at Arlington as a philosophy major, and soon declared a second major, classical studies, after reading works from the pre-socratics and Plato. The ancients captivated his imagination. He completed both degrees in a furious 2 and a half years, but was very successful. He twice received a national scholarship for academic excellence, and twice received the Holmes Scholarship for excellence in classical studies. He also was the founding president of the Zeto Rho Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, an honor society for classical languages. He was active in both the philosophy and classics clubs both as a member and an officer. He was also a member of Alpha Chi, the national honor society. He graduated magna cum laude. Mitch went on to graduate school the following year on scholarship, but was distracted from this goal the following summer when he suffered a serious accident and was unable to return. Mitch has been taking part in philosophy on the internet since 1995, and he built his first website in 1997. After his accident, Mitch turned more and more to the web to scratch his philosophy itch, and in September of 1999 founded The Examined Life as a discussion forum on the web. In January of the following year, Mitch becamed the events coordinator for the Philosophers' Magazine, where he maintained a database of philosophy events the world over, and also reviews philosophy sites on the web. At the same time, Mitch, with Chris Altieri and Paul Rezendes, began The Examined Life On-Line Philosophy Journal which met with instant success. Today, the site averages 40, 000 hits a week, and has published 150 submissions from philosphers all over the world. Mitch has continued his endeavors on the web, and owns a web development company, Metis Productions, which develops commercial websites with the latest technologies. In the fall of 2002, Mitch returned to the University of Texas at Arlington to pursue a Masters in Humanities. His focus continues to be philosophy and classical studies. He plans to proceed with the Ph.D. in philosophy after that. His greatest joy, however, is his son, Jesse. Jesse, now in his middle teens, is a bright young man who shares many of his father's passions. He is an avid reader and scholar of ancient myth and civilizations, fancies himself to be a scientist, and is very active in building web pages. Also, Jesse is a trumpeter extrodinaire, receiving many honors. He genuinely loves music. In addition, Jesse exhibits an incredible natural ability with language. At the age of 7, Jesse took it upon himself to learn sign language, and memorized an entire sign language dictionary in one afternoon. Jesse is also accomplished in learning Spanish and ancient Greek. Mitch beams with pride for his son. Mitch and Jesse currently live in Arlington, TX. |
